Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only or Deny Posting List due to Copyright Complaints

I can understand the reason for excerpting or linking, but for the life of me I can't understand why we can't post anything at all from some of them. Can anyone explain? I would think they would get more publicity with an FR posting, and they say that "there's no such thing as bad publicity."

If you have the FR 501(c) corp. buy (hard copy or digital) subscriptions to a newspaper media outlet, and rewrite the corp's charter to include specific references to "fair use", research, criticism, and critique, you'd be able to have any Freeper who identifies their financial contribution to FR be able to both post and critique the media? Before you introduced the moderator system people were suggesting a rated system similar to slashdot for posters, well this could be a way to do so, increase monthly paying members, and stick it to those who are denying you the use of publicly posted news stories.

Second suggestion, and much simpler, alter the code to create pop unders to the original articles from major media outlets. A list of safe websites would have to be maintained, or Freepers with less secure computers could be in trouble. If your outbound traffic is analysed, you could start with the most linked websites. If you have pop unders, the IT guys over at the media outlets will notice their inbound traffic coming from FR, but in a more positive light, The Drudgereport with commentary, or just another editorial blog if they aren't aware of FR's history. I know it might have a loss of stickyness for FR though, but it could be the basis for an eventual shift to blog based software, which would delay your problems with media companies because of fair use.

Third, remove this post, it's probably being emailed around newsrooms right now. It's a sign of weakness on your part, it's just to darn honest for these people not to join the wolfpack attack. Every IT manager at a news outlet can now use FR as an excuse for his failure to draw traffic, and his Liberal newsroom editor bosses will be inclined to believe him. Hence they come after you.

Funny how Fox and MSNBC require excerpting, but not CNN.....oh wait, that's right, CNN needs all the publicity it can get these days.....:-)

Funny, another website where I'm a member has people posting messages all the time that contain the entire article from many of the sites that are whining about Free Republic. I decided to see if they cared about a site that is primarily an anti-U.S. and anti-Bush. Whenever people posted articles from the L.A. Slimes or Washington Compost I would report it to whichever paper it came from.

So far, there has not been any complaints from either paper and people continue to post the full articles.
