‘A step back in time': America’s Catholic Church sees an immense shift toward the old ways

The progressive priests who dominated the U.S. church in the years after Vatican II are now in their 70s and 80s. Many are retired. Some are dead. Younger priests, surveys show, are far more conservative.

“They say they’re trying to restore what us old guys ruined,” said the Rev. John Forliti, 87, a retired Twin Cities priest who fought for civil rights and reforms in Catholic school sex education.

Doug Koesel, an outspoken 72-year-old priest at Blessed Trinity Parish in Cleveland, was blunter: “They’re just waiting for us to die.”

At St. Maria Goretti, once steeped in the ethos of Vatican II, many parishioners saw the changes as a requiem.

“I don’t want my daughter to be Catholic,” said Christine Hammond, whose family left the parish when the new outlook spilled into the church’s school and her daughter’s classroom. “Not if this is the Roman Catholic Church that is coming.”

“I’m not a Catholic anymore,” said Hammond, the woman who left when the church’s school began to change. “Not even a little bit.”

News flash: you never really were.

I have to confess to a certain schadenfraude when I see articles like this. And they’re becoming more and more frequent because young people are craving tradition, authenticity, depth, beauty, and truth, all of which have been so lacking in most parishes for decades due to the same folks who are now “aging out.” The biological solution is starting to bear real fruit.

Most of the priests and nuns who were ordained or took vows in the 60s and 70s were sincere and generous with their lives, as misguided as they were, and were sold a bill of goods by their superiors. It must be hard to have given your life to something you really believed in just to see it completely fall apart at the end of your life. Kind of like the priests and nuns before them. My schadenfraude is not directed at them. It is directed at the bishops and priests and nuns who infiltrated the church to destroy it.

As soon as they reinstate Latin mass and denounce homosexual behavior. Anything else is the normal misdirection.

In 1968, Father Forliti joined 75 other priests in the Archdiocese of St. Paul- Minneapolis in dissenting from “Humanae Vitae”. Despite his rejection of the Church’s teaching on contraception, he became Archdiocesan Director of Secondary Religious Education. In a 1971 adult education series he lectured Catholics as follows:

“The Christian Church is all one big pie and the Catholic Church is just one wedge in that pie ... Since Vatican II we have re-evaluated many things that Protestants instituted during the Reformation and we now realize they are good and we are accepting them. For instance:
Doing away with Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament because now Christ is equally present in the people;
Allow married clergy;
Doing away with the Sunday Mass obligation; and
changes in Private confession - after all, sins are forgiven in the Eucharist

And then…..

Fr Koesel is encouraging his parishioners to attend the prayer vigil in support of (liberal) nuns on Wednesday. The event is being organized by FutureChurch, a national liberal group based in Lakewood.

“The nuns were there for us. Let us be there for them,” Koesel wrote in a weekly church bulletin. He said in an interview that the church hierarchy should be concentrating on issues that matter — poverty, war, ecology — “not investigating who’s following what law.”

After listening to who has to be the greatest exorcist if not the greatest theologian of the 20th century Malachi Martin and his old interviews with Art Bell on YouTube, I agree that the idea that the seminaries had of allowing people with homosexual tendencies into the priesthood was the greatest mistake in the 2000 year history of the church.

The thinking was they were going to be celibate anyway so it doesn’t make a difference.

However, the percentage that have other mental conditions is much higher for the same-sex attracted candidates.

This is what let the wolves into the sheep pasture.

I’ve got news for her. Everyone who was baptized Catholic and received the sacraments is going to be judged a Catholic on judgement day

That’s not my idea it’s the dogma of the church

No such thing as an ex catholic

Your kind has virtually destroyed the Catholic Church as a vehicle of salvation. Send your daughter off to Columbia University if you want her to remain the kind of “Catholic” that you are now.

One of my earliest memories as a toddler in the early 1970s was going to Mass with my Mother and watching hippies with guitars and bongos sing the liturgy

Even my 4 year-old self thought it was strange, disrespectful and tawdry. I could get the same experience watching TV at home

You’re right, of course. My comment about her never having been Catholic was more about her thinking than about her status as a Catholic.

Those of us who were raising young families in traditional Catholicism during the pontificates of JPII and B-16 were praying, hoping and expecting this to happen eventually (Benedict himself predicted that we would likely become a smaller, but more faithful Church). We knew that "Progressivism" in the Church is a sterile ad lifeless pursuit, doctrinally and practically. The same misguided fools who embraced and promoted liberalism in the Church tend to not re-produce and their ideology is bound to die with them. At the same time, traditional Catholic families are, for the most part, having larger families.

Pope Francis is part of the old "Vatican II" generation. He won't be Pope forever and, though his influence (and maybe that of his immediate successor) may hang on for a while, someday all of these liberal and weak old Cardinals and bishops will be gone and the new generation of traditional Catholics will be in the drivers seat again. I myself may not live to see it's full fruits, but I have faith in God that He will restore His Church.

One of the most manly things you can do is get married to a woman and raise children. This is Gods plan. When you force remove women & family you invite perversion and a burning that leads to destruction. You get weak men, and weak men are the most dangerous.

“They’re just waiting for us to die.”

I know I am. It’s up to the laity and the Holy Spirit now. Our parish undid most of the horrible “remodeling “ and has 24-hr adoration. We also now recite the prayer to St. Michael at the end of every Mass.
