Has anyone had LASIK eye surgery?

Posted on 05/16/2024 8:12:10 PM PDT by Jamestown1630

Has anyone here had LASIK eye surgery, and have you been happy with the results? I'd especially like to hear from those who have had it on one eye.

I have one eye that is very good, and one with astigmatism that seems to get worse as I age. I'm thinking of having Lasik on the bad eye.

Thanks very much to anyone who has the time to reply.

Thank you. The one person I know who had it has been very satisfied, too.

I dated a nice young woman who’s father was an expert in LASIK. Everyone loved the change after the procedure.

I don’t think that it is recommended if your eyes are very light sensitive because it will most likely make it much worse.

July 1999
So almost 25 years ago.
I had fairly bad nearsightedness.
Best decision I ever made.

My eyes were too dry to wear contact lenses.

Like others I now rely on readers for close work including computer/phone. But would not go back, no way.

Thanks. I’m not particularly light-sensitive, except once when I had an eye infection. But that was so painful, before I knew what it was and had it treated I was afraid I had a serious issue.

I think I fit your criteria. Male, 75, had Lasik, both eyes, in 2002. First year, I had problems with night vision, primarily halos around lights. This faded away until I just, one day, realized it was gone. Seems like I also had a problem for a couple of months with dry eye but that also resolved.

I previously had been diagnosed with astigmatism and was prescribed glasses for it but the glasses were worse than the astigmatism so quit wearing them. I must have adapted to it as I’m fine now.

I have often said that the Lasik surgery was one of the best decisions I ever made. I would not hesitate to do it again. Best of luck!

I just had PK six weeks ago, three weeks before my 79th birthday.

If you can fix your vision with contacts or glasses, I’d go for that. Not a good idea to inflict unnecessary surgery on any body part, but especially the eyes.

I had it in 1999. Actually a few months before it was approved by FDA. It was the end of a trial program. Great result, and it’s improved a lot since then. One caveat...make sure you get complete records of everything. 15 years later I needed cataract surgery. They needed very good records on my Lasik to get that right. Luckily Eye Foundation in Birmingham Alabama had very good records and my cataract surgery worked out great. A friend who had Lasik at Emory in Atlanta didn’t have a good outcome. Shocked me to discover that Emory lost his records...always thought they were world class for medical stuff. Make sure you get and retain good records for the surgery. Highly recommended with that caveat.

I had Lasik in 2005 and overall enjoyed it. It got me 20/15 vision for awhile. I did have to have my right eye re-done in May 2005 after the initial surgery in January, because that one didn’t turn out quite right.

Alas, age has caught up to me. My reading vision is now atrocious, and I have the beginnings of cataracts and a return of myopia. Fortunately, I can cheat for distance vision with lower-magnitude (computer) reading glasses, while reading books with higher-powered ones.

One thing about Lasik: I have heard that it can be more conductive to cataracts later on in life, so I’m not surprised I’m getting them. Also, your vision has to be stable — not necessarily good, just not changing, either — for you to qualify. You said one eye is getting worse. Those are just two things to think about while you’re considering this move.

sweet moment after her surgery: we were in bed, just starting to stir, she leaned over me, looked at the clock and said: “it’s 5:30.

I loved being able to see what the clock said first thing without having to put on glasses.

Thanks. So far, I’ve had no cataract diagnosis.

Mrs. Slim did it twice, and after a cataract lens replacement she still need glasses.

I can’t complain, if her vision was perfect she’d probably never married me.

Yep, I’ve heard good outcomes, and I’ve heard infections. Look for docs with extremely excellent track records of success.

Many thanks to everyone who responded. I obviously have to research and think about this.
